Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny Review

, here is my review of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. I won't go into too much detail but I will be saying some things that are spoilers so be warned.

The movie starts in WW2 with the Nazis are taking treasure from a castle, and a Nazi by the name of Jurgen Voller is looking for the spear that pierced Christs side, but when it is located among the treasure it is proven to be fake even though all the other treasure is real. It is at this point we see Archimedes Dial, also known as the Antikythera, but only the first half. Indy is successful in retrieving with the help of his partner Basil Shaw.

The movie then moves to 1969 where most of the rest of the movie is based and were Indy with his Goddaughter Helena who is the daughter of Basil goes in search of the second half of the dial, along with the teenager Teddy. Indiana Jones wouldn't be Indiana Jones without someone else looking for the second half who happens to be Jurgen Voller and his team.

They travel from the US to the Mediterranean and find a missing peace of the puzzle on a 2000 year old wreck which points them to the second half of the dial. They find the second half and the Nazi's take it from them. Jurgen tells Indy that he will use the dial to go back in time to kill Hitler and become Furer himself and make sure that the allies also lose the war.

As they take off to the rift that was suppose to take them to 1939 Indy realizes that Voller factored continental drift into his coordinates for time travel – a geologic hypothesis that the mathematician and engineer Archimedes would not have known about at the time he built the Dial. That means the plane is headed to the wrong point in time but it’s too late to abort the mission. The teenager Teddy who stole a small plane was also in pursuit (with an unknown sleeping passenger) entered into the rift following the other. Instead of ending up in Germany 1939 they ended up in the Siege of Syracuse. The plane is shot down by the roman ships that were attacking Syracuse thinking the boomer was a dragon.

The plane crashes killing all on board except for Helena and Indy who is seriously injured. As their parachute lands Archimedes approaches them. The other plane lands and they need to depart before the rift closes. Indy tells Helena he wants to stay, but Helena says he can't as it would effect the timeline.

We then move back to 1969, Indy is back. During the course of the movie we find out that his son was killed in the war which I'm assuming is the Vietnam war and the death drove him and Marion apart. They get back together and the movie ends. I think it would have been a good send off to leave Indy back in time were he wanted.

Overall I thought the movie was good, it kept you interested and very little and way of boring bits. Although I would have the say that the CGI was not the best. James Mangold said he used mostly real world practical things but the scenes in NYC were mostly CGI and I expect that the Volume was used during the filming it just the way some of the background looked. I noticed a lot lately that movies tend not to have the best CGI, I'm thinking of The Flash, Shazam Fury of the Gods and Black Adam to name a few. I know that some studios are trying to cut down on costs, but this made it way to obvious, unless the ultra 4K made it worse I don't know. But I know that ILM can do better than that.

My overall rating I give it 3/5. Even though it is a good movie I think they should have stopped with the first 3 movies and just left it as a trilogy, but that's just my thought. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
